Spadeclub Nightly $500

May 4, 2009

Let’s face it, I just run terribly on Spadeclub poker online. I played in the $500 nightly I multitable casino tournament which had 1,196 players in it. Only the final two tables would be awarded money, though up to 198 players received points.

The tournament starts you with 3,000 chips. As I have been doing lately when I am not risking very much in entering these tournaments, I went all in on the first hand. I do this for a few reasons:

I had some friends coming over for dinner and the doorbell just rang.

If I am going to have to take a big coin flip or 60/40 at some point in this tournament, I’d rather it be right at the beginning instead of wasting a few hours. The payouts, as I said are only the final two tables. If I lose, it’s ok, and if I win, I’m off to a good start.

Lately I hate playing at the beginning of tournaments. The blinds are so small that your raises mean nothing and your big pairs always get action and often get cracked.

People get silly at the beginning of tournaments and want to call all ins. Unless I’m against a big pair, with any 2 cards I’m still usually not at a big deficit against their range of calling hands. I don’t mind being against a, 9 with J, 7 that much.

Anyway, however illogical or poorly this argument is for playing absurdly, I do it from time to time when the payouts only reach a tiny fraction of the field (18 of 1196 = 1.5%). I went all in with 7,8 off suit on the first hand and tripled up to just over 9k. I sat out for about 30 minutes.

After dinner I came back and started playing online poker sparingly, trying to keep my head above 9k without risking very much. I had to take a few flips with short stacks. I remember once instance where I went all in over a short stacks all in; they had A, 2 and I had QQ and of course an ace flopped. Anyway, I went kept doing well and got up to 40k, then dumped some down to 20k and got back up to 45k. They moved me to a new table. I folded a few hands in early position and then I was hit by the blinds.
