Getting Real Interviews at Job Faires

January 21, 2010

Standing out at a Career Fair can make a difference in your job hunting. Job Fairs are starting to pick up, and a major job search company is running some nice ones, called Targeted Job Fairs. At a Bay Area Job Faire in January, 10 companies as showing up, and Dice has 82 career fairs scheduled for 2010 across the US.

How do you get to the real interviews at a Career Fair? The contention can be substantial, but you can help yourself jump out from the herd with early homework. At AA-Careers, we have a straight-forward 6-step process to get ready. Plan to go? Here’s how to prepare:

First, research the companies that are going and pick your targets. Use the internet to research the companies that are there beforehand. Go to their sites and see if they have their jobs listed. Pick a sensible number to target, and get ready to spend an hour researching each one. It’s hard to do more than 9 in a day, and three to five is a much more reasonable target. For each hiring company, you want to know: recent news, key product lines, and exectuve names. Try to see if you know anyone at the target companies. You should end up with a page or two of research for each company/job.

Second, if there are job openings on the web, read them to see what the company is looking for. Create a mapping of your accomplishments and skills to the demands of the job. Make the language match. If the hiring company calls customers "clients", your resume should do the same thing. The accomplishments should be written in the style of the hiring company.

Third, create a ‘thumbnail sales pitch’ for each potential company/position combination. Write down a ninety second ‘thumbnail’ that you can repeat out loud describing why you are a key prospect for that position. You’ll use this in your resume and when you meet the team from the company at the job kiosk.

Fourth, modify your resume for each job type. The objective on your resume should exactly match the job you’re want. The executive summary should be a written form of your “mini sales pitch” for the job. Then choose the accomplishments and skills that most clearly match the job prerequisites. Especially at a Career Fair, the purpose of your resume is a sales tool for you – to get you on-site job interviews. It should be very easy to see that you’re a fit based on your resume.

Fifth, dress and prepare as if you’re doing on-site interviews. Dress well and be well groomed. Don’t over do-it (this isn’t a date!) and don’t underdress (no jeans or t-shirts, no matter how much you paid for them). Avoid strong cologne or perfume.

Finally, rehearse your ‘mini-sales-pitch’. Collect your research and the resume for each opportunity - bring a couple of copies for each – and put each in a distinctly marked folder. Keep them in a lightweight briefcase or folio.

Remember to smile, and good hunting!

Global Warming and Building Green in the Very near Future!

January 12, 2010

Building green is one of the solutions to global warming that many people do not think about. Building green is designing and constructing buildings with the environment in mind. It is these practices that can have an impact on stopping global warming. Houses give off a high percentage of a country’s total carbon dioxide emissions. In the United States, the figure is about 38%. Since carbon dioxide is one of the greenhouse gases, houses contribute strongly to global warming. One way to cut the greenhouse emissions of houses, and therefore help stop global warming, is to minimize the energy use needed to sustain comfortable living in a house. There are several ways to do this. One way is to be careful about what building materials are used. Some building materials can be from quickly renewable sources. These include bamboo and straw. Also, building materials can be used that originates near the building site. This cuts down on transportation, and so cuts down on emissions of greenhouse gases and global warming. One example is stone houses built with local stone. Buildings are also often built using recycled materials. Wood can be used from an older home that has been torn down. This will prevent the need to cut down other trees. Since the deforestation of the land contributes to global warming, this will help the situation. Heating and cooling have a big effect on the amount of global warming caused by a house. Some ways to help this are very simple. One is to design the house to sit on the lot so that sunlight will come in through the windows and warm the house. It can also be oriented so that breezes will blow through the windows more naturally for cooling. In this way, passive solar energy can be used to heat and cool the house. This will cut down on the greenhouse emissions from a house. Global warming will be lessened. Insulation is important to maximize on the cool or heat that is in the house. With good insulation, you will need a less intense heat or cooling source. The main heating and cooling source in most green houses will be solar panels, wind power, or hydropower. Any of these sources will power a house with minimal effects on global warming. At the same time, these sources of energy will sustain a household in a comfortable style. There are several organizations in the US that aid in the cause of stopping global warming by encouraging green building. One non-profit organization makes it their business to foster green building methods in both houses and commercial buildings. This group of people from the building industry is a part of the Green Building Initiative.

What to Do about an Upcoming Interview

October 4, 2009

You have graduated from high school and now you are standing by for your first real job. Youve sent out out Applications and have been called in for your elementary interview. How can you do well at the interview so you end up being presented the appointment? It is always worth considering going for a medical interview course

Get dressed professionally. No midriff shirts, low-cut blouses or flip-flops because youre going to work and not the coast. While its unnecessary to purchase a suit, it is specifically important to look professional. If you are trying to get a post in a old school office such as an accounting firm, do not clothe as if you were going to a gig. If you are applying for a retail position, you have a little more freedom. Rather than list what clothes is and is not all right, I would tell you to dress as if you were going to meet one of the most influential individuals in your life- for the reason that you are!

There are many another other ways in which you could get yourself better prepared for your upcoming interview. You could make sure that you know how to get to the venue so that you wont be late. You could research the corporation so that you can ask pertinent questions and try to appear keen and conversant. You could ask the current workers what they think of the place. That way, you will not only be able to better appraise whether the post is suitable for you, but also learn some valuable insights that could help you secure the post.

First impressions add up, and you would like to let the interviewer know you would like the post, are willing to work hard and will do your best. You might not necessarily be the most qualified candidate, but still land the appointment since you were the most outstanding one. Best of luck with your job interview!

Score a Date through Professional Matchmakers

June 8, 2009

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not a spineless cheesball dude, traditionally occupied by going without a date every weekend. It’s unlikely you haven’t witnessed me ramble on great dating and relationships. There’s a reason for that.

Datelessness is an unfortunate foreign condition and intentionally neglected in my genetics. Even so, There’s no point avoiding it, I had to escape from a worthwhile fling and I felt a great deal for but just carried on to nowhere. So somone could tell ya it may have been a good since I dated. I can’t find the dating with great expectations I held years ago.

Single life has had its perks so far. It’s a given that I won’t sit tight, peacefully devowering Jack Bauer (from 24) reruns. The biggest factor behind this spell of temporary dating lameness? My coworkers are stiffs, and everyone else is boring.

My go-getting college pal, Andrew, who will never have dating apathy, told me he’s almost in a similar place. He signed up for Great Expectations Phoenix. Not usually my thing, but I enjoy mingling among sophisticated singles who meet my values. Surprise, I got real about my dating life and paid the membership fee to get started.

I told myself, you wouldn’t grovel about being alone if you haven’t picked up the phone. Like my senior year soccer coach Paul Smith snuck into conversation with a smile, “Fools lose before they try, shooter.”

So he was divorced 4 times. But, the man was truly a wise sould in a way nobody could understand. He was good humored. The crazy series of Dallas singles events I just went to could have overloaded coach’s brain.

At great expectations singles events I mingled with a few quality and attractive women that hold my expectations. I truthfully had a blast with dozens of pretty noteworthy singles. Went home following a promising exchange of numbers, and as a plus, I came across some political acquaintances for my job. Success.

Take action. You won’t complain if you don’t. Don’t sell yourself short, at least have great expectations for your dating life.

Respectfully,

Larry D.
