Getting Real Interviews at Job Faires

January 21, 2010

Standing out at a Career Fair can make a difference in your job hunting. Job Fairs are starting to pick up, and a major job search company is running some nice ones, called Targeted Job Fairs. At a Bay Area Job Faire in January, 10 companies as showing up, and Dice has 82 career fairs scheduled for 2010 across the US.

How do you get to the real interviews at a Career Fair? The contention can be substantial, but you can help yourself jump out from the herd with early homework. At AA-Careers, we have a straight-forward 6-step process to get ready. Plan to go? Here’s how to prepare:

First, research the companies that are going and pick your targets. Use the internet to research the companies that are there beforehand. Go to their sites and see if they have their jobs listed. Pick a sensible number to target, and get ready to spend an hour researching each one. It’s hard to do more than 9 in a day, and three to five is a much more reasonable target. For each hiring company, you want to know: recent news, key product lines, and exectuve names. Try to see if you know anyone at the target companies. You should end up with a page or two of research for each company/job.

Second, if there are job openings on the web, read them to see what the company is looking for. Create a mapping of your accomplishments and skills to the demands of the job. Make the language match. If the hiring company calls customers "clients", your resume should do the same thing. The accomplishments should be written in the style of the hiring company.

Third, create a ‘thumbnail sales pitch’ for each potential company/position combination. Write down a ninety second ‘thumbnail’ that you can repeat out loud describing why you are a key prospect for that position. You’ll use this in your resume and when you meet the team from the company at the job kiosk.

Fourth, modify your resume for each job type. The objective on your resume should exactly match the job you’re want. The executive summary should be a written form of your “mini sales pitch” for the job. Then choose the accomplishments and skills that most clearly match the job prerequisites. Especially at a Career Fair, the purpose of your resume is a sales tool for you – to get you on-site job interviews. It should be very easy to see that you’re a fit based on your resume.

Fifth, dress and prepare as if you’re doing on-site interviews. Dress well and be well groomed. Don’t over do-it (this isn’t a date!) and don’t underdress (no jeans or t-shirts, no matter how much you paid for them). Avoid strong cologne or perfume.

Finally, rehearse your ‘mini-sales-pitch’. Collect your research and the resume for each opportunity - bring a couple of copies for each – and put each in a distinctly marked folder. Keep them in a lightweight briefcase or folio.

Remember to smile, and good hunting!

How to discover interesting books on-line

Everybody recognises Amazon, the world?s biggest online bookshop, but there are a great deal of different online bookstores, particularly if you are looking for books in other languages than English. Virago has reasonable prices but so have other on-line volume shops and if you admit shipping costs it can often be less expensive to buy your volumes locally.

You can equate prices on books at many web sites, personally I use bogpriser to find the best costs for volumes and these costs takes on sending, so the answers are comparable. The on-line bookshop deals all kinds of books, novels, fiction, nonfictional prose, and volumes on psychological science and how to make a internet site.

One field which occupies me is depressive disorder and anxiousness and how to cope with clinical depression. I endure from clinical depression and have to take tablets every day to be fit to live a normal life. Antidepressants have changed my living and clinical depression enquiry is something I relish studying about.

My experiences in dealing with depression have resulted in a site where I describe my findings in meeting depression and the domain of antidepressants. The site and my publishing is also a great therapy and because I have a cheap webhost, there are really few expenses in the project.

Volumes on depression and how to cope with clinical depression, volumes on making websites and great novels for the lasting dark winter evenings are seen on the internet. In on-line bookshops it is smooth to equate costs, availability and different components which can assist in the purchase.

Top Tips for Choosing the Right Bedsheet - It’s Mesmerizing

July 6, 2009

A long time ago when I was a child, I remember that all the loft bed sheets in my house had to be white cotton ones. today you find so much variety in these bedding that it becomes hard to choose. The latest bed sheets are available in attractive prints and colorings that change the look of your bedroom

The following are some factors that matter a lot when you buy a bed sheet.

Take the beds measurements

Though we are all aware what a twin or king or queen sizing bed is, that there are no standard dimensions for these kinds of beds. Usually the top measurings dont differ a lot but the other dimensions vary with each bed maker. Due to this discrepancy in the proportions, it is safe to measure all the proportions and the depth of your mattress too. You will find that some beds are longer or wider than others with the same name. It is always better to be ready with your beds dimensions prior to shopping.

Zero down on the Bedding storehouse

Large departmental storehouses have a separate division for linen and bedding and offer branded sheets and in-house brands under the same roof. Those looking for embroidered or luxurious looking sheets can buy them from a specialty storehouse. The Internet is brimming with fresh new patterns every day. The basic are sold in discount storehouses for a reasonable cost.

Do you know what is a thread count?

A thread count signifies the count of threads consisted in one square inch of a sheet in both weaving directions. The label of the bedsheet has the thread count impressed on it. For a lavish feel, a high thread count is desirable. Dont go for a higher thread count than preferred as the thin single threads will not feel comfortable. It is advisable that you go for a thread count in the range of 175 - 250 for a soft sheet under you.

Choose the bed sheet fabric.

A material that is sensibly priced and feels nice to sleep on is the one for you. Though cotton fiber is the most preferred material, some people go for the cotton blends as they do not crease. A cold night calls for a flannel bed sheet. Those who wish a casual sheet can go for satin or silk.

Measure the bed sheet

Now you need to calculate the length and breadth of the bed sheet. Refer the bed sizing and find out if the chosen bed sheet will be perfect for it. Remember that all bedding shrink by 7% when they are first washed. Also, if these sheets are fine, purchase some extra sets for your beds. They help greatly in case one of the sheets is torn or soiled..

Hope these six steps lead you to finding a perfect bed sheet for your bed.

Review: The Muse On Writing

May 21, 2008

Editor: Lea Schizas
ISBN: 1554043174

The Muse on Writing was published, as Editor Lea Schizas declares in the introduction, “to unravel some writing aspects in a way not presented in other writing books.” To accomplish this feat she has amassed nineteen excellent writers and authors, each of whom have combined their knowledge pertaining to important topics as the writer’s voice, conflict, plotting, dialogue, characterization, inspirational writing, writer’s block, and editing. In addition, there are chapters covering topics that are generally not found in books of a similar nature, such as psychological diagnoses that writers may find useful, helping kids to become writers, screenwriting, writing for digital games, and flash fiction.

You are probably wondering, as I did, what is flash fiction? Mike Kechula, who has written twenty-nine nonfiction books, recently switched to this genre and he has won first prize in four flash fiction contests. His contribution pertaining to this new literary form is an eye-opener, and if you are interested in trying your hand at flash fiction, this chapter will be of immense help. The chapter divides itself into six sections: discovering flash fiction, getting started, meeting reader expectations, hitting the mark, finding story ideas, twelve tips for developing genre flash fiction. The result is an extraordinary collection of useful tips providing newcomers as well as seasoned writers with a veritable goldmine pertaining to flash fiction.

Another excellent chapter and one that is not very often included in books on the craft of writing is Robert A. Redmond’s contribution that offers insights into teaching students how to write. Redmond has conducted workshops for teachers, and he passes along his knowledge pertaining to such topics as developing a community of writers, workshops, lessons, ways to gather ideas, giving feedback to writers, and other vital elements of writing.

Conveniently divided the diversity of topics covered in The Muse On Writing is written in a highly readable style that presents tours of specific areas of the writing process. Moreover, the book is admirable in its scope as it manages to pack in a wealth of information in a stimulating and focused manner that will aid you in honing your skills. This book has truly something for everyone-even a chapter with author interviews conducted by Lea Schizas that are quite fascinating to read!
